As you will be aware, following a dangerous increase in Coronavirus infections right across London and the identification of a new strain of the virus, London has been moved to a new Tier 4 of restrictions on what people can and can’t do. This is an extremely serious situation where the virus is spreading quickly, increasing pressure on the NHS and making it difficult to control. Sadly Tier 4 also meant that for many people, plans to see relatives and loved ones over the Christmas period had to be cancelled as restrictions on travel and gathering with others were put in place.
Whilst we understand the anger many people feel about how the Government has made decisions regarding the introduction or relaxation of restrictions on our daily lives over recent months, especially with London having moved from Tier 2 to Tier 4 in just five days – we ask everyone to follow the rules and play your part in stopping the spread of the virus. We all must follow the guidance from the NHS and scientific advisers, because otherwise there could be serious consequences for our friends, neighbours and loved ones – not only through the prolonged restrictions on our everyday lives, but as more and more people need hospital treatment and more damage is done to local businesses and jobs. It is also important that those offered the vaccine take that opportunity to protect themselves.
Lambeth Council is working hard to support the most vulnerable through this crisis (including providing financial support and food/care packages); it is also supporting the NHS to continue the roll out of the vaccine, helping businesses follow the rules and expanding local testing. We are committed to doing all that we can, but we need to work together, just as we did earlier this year to protect each other. Our amazing Tulse Hill community continues to come together to support one another – with neighbours supporting those who are living on their own and collecting shopping and medicines for those who are self-isolating. If you are worried about someone, are finding things difficult yourself or need help in any way – please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
