We understand the frustration that many felt around the closure of Brockwell Park on Sunday last weekend. This was particularly disappointing as the actions of a few people who were unwilling to respect social distancing rules had a huge impact on everyone else, including the large number of local people for whom Brockwell Park is their only outdoor space. This decision by Lambeth Council was not taken lightly and followed advice on community safety from the Metropolitan Police.
As councillors we wrote to the Council Cabinet Member for Culture requesting further measures be put in place to reinforce social distancing rules before any future decisions about the park were made. This included a suggestion from one local Tulse Hill Ward resident who suggested spraying 2m social distancing reminders on the paths which you now May have seen. It has not been possible to change everything about how things work overnight, but these measures and people changing their behaviour have subsequently played a role in ensuring the park stays open.
Understandably, the Lambeth Country Show has been cancelled this year – but will return in 2021!
