One of the amazing stories to have come out of the last few weeks is the half a million people who have signed up as part of the ‘Your NHS Needs You’ campaign to be NHS Volunteer Responders (click here if you want to sign up). The scheme is focused on those who the NHS believes are more likely to need support because of their medical situation – such as having a long-term condition, are pregnant and/or have a weakened immune system. If you are not sure if you are in this group, you can check by clicking here.
Here in Lambeth the Council and its councillors, working in partnership with the local NHS and community organisations like Age UK Lambeth, have been working to support the most vulnerable residents. The Council has set up a local volunteering scheme (sign up here) to help support the 5000+ local people who have been identified by the Council and our partners as needing extra care. There’s also support for those of you who run local businesses or voluntary groups and a £0.5m fund for residents experiencing financial difficulties.
On a more local level, we have been working closely with the fantastic volunteers who are running the Tulse Hill mutual aid group (click here to join the WhatsApp group) and the many more local estate/road groups that have been created and nearly cover the whole Ward (click here to find your local group). Volunteers have distributed a leaflet with the phone numbers of people who live nearby who may be able to help with day-to-day tasks like picking up shopping or walking the dog if people are required to self-isolate and cannot go outside. Lambeth mutual aid covers everyone, but there is a focus on reaching out to older and vulnerable people, so please do get involved in your local group if you are not already.
If you don’t use WhatsApp, don’t want to join a large group or know someone who wants to help/needs support but don’t want to pass that information on in an open forum – please do let us know and we can help put you in touch with your local group. As your Councillors we will always treat information passed to us confidentially.
