Security of key landmarks and public places is an important national priority. Within Lambeth there are a number of important sites where it is necessary to make sure that there is appropriate protection from potential attack by terrorists or others. This is an important process, in which the Council has been working in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and others.
Following recommendations from the Council’s Police advisor on security matters, temporary measures to increase safety on and around Windrush Square were required to be implemented on the 9th and 10th of July, during night time works. It is expected that the concrete blocks will be in place for a short time span until a permanent solution is developed and approved.
The works are needed because of the identified risk to the public following a number of terrorist attacks in London, as well as the high-profile and culturally significant status which Windrush Square enjoys. It is critical that every effort is made to protect such an iconic place, where many people gather.
Every effort has been made to minimise the adverse impact of these new essential installations through good design. The Council has very clear expectations and wants to strike the right balance between protecting people and places, but also maintaining the accessibility and atmosphere of such a wonderful place as Windrush Square.
